What Do Rubber Bands on Braces Do?

Getting braces may already be something you’re a little intimidated by, and that’s perfectly normal. It’s a big commitment to make the decision and then keep up with the maintenance of orthodontic treatment. We’re here to tell you the result is definitely worth it. You’ll be ecstatic with your new smile and self-confidence. One topic orthodontists get a lot of questions about is rubber bands on braces. Let’s dive into the basics and find out what this accessory is all about.

What’s the Purpose of Getting Rubber Bands on Braces?

Rubber bands (also called elastics) are used during orthodontic treatment to help with the adjustment of specific conditions. Not every person will require elastics during their time with braces, but many patients benefit from the added force the accessory brings. Elastics are connected to your brackets on small metal hooks. You wear them in certain patterns as prescribed by your orthodontist; many times more than one configuration will be utilized.

If you have an overbite, underbite, open bite, crossbite, or other issues with jaw alignment, your treatment could include this type of rubber bands. Some people will use elastics to help speed up the process of adjusting spacing or positioning of teeth. Everyone is different, and your orthodontist will know just how to walk you through the process if you do require elastics.

Another type of rubber band used with braces are ligatures. These bands attach the archwires to the brackets on your teeth. Having ligatures on your braces isn’t something to frown about! The invention of colored ligatures was a wonderful thing for the orthodontic world. Having the option of adding color to your braces is a bonus, and you can use colored ligatures to make your braces your own. Color your world while correcting your smile!

Rubber Bands Are For Invisalign Folks Too

A lot of patients opt out of traditional metal braces and go for clear aligners. If this sounds like you, don’t worry: you can still get the same level of care with aligners like Invisalign. You can still correct your bite in addition to straightening your teeth even if you don’t want regular braces. If you do require elastics during orthodontic treatment with clear aligners, adding the extra accessory will make them slightly more noticeable (still less than metal braces, however).

Your treatment will use elastic bands attached to small hooks cut into the aligners. A lot of times, the positioning of the bands won’t be in the front of your mouth so they’ll already be out of sight. The way these accessories work is the same as with metal braces, but the process of putting them on will be a little different. Luckily, clear rubber bands are a popular option for people with Invisalign, so you don’t have to worry about noticeability.
